While researching some information for a friend, I just ran across this posting on amblyopia and chiropractic and wanted to share it with all of you. The 6 year old was diagnosed with Strabismus and amblyopia at age 5. She started off at 20/1600 in the right and 20/20 in the left eye. She did the regular course of patching that eventually took her to 20/80 and back up to 20/100 without any progression past that point. Then, her mom decided to try chiropractic. Her thermal scans and x-rays showed misalignment and nerve interference in the top vertebrae. After 4 months of chiropractic treatment, her eye perked up to 20/50!
If you know someone that is experiencing problems with their eyes, such as amblyopia or the blood supply being cut off to the optic nerve, definitely have them get checked by a chiropractor. If the nerves are being pinched off that go to the blood flow to the eyes, it just might help restore some vision.
See one of our favorite patient testimonials from Bev, who went from over 100 blind spots in one eye down to 1.5. Check out her story below on chiropractic and optic nerve atrophy.
It was all fate
In October 2003 will setting up for a Halloween party at my dad’s barn my glasses fell from my face to the concrete floor. After picking up the lens to my glasses I realized there was a chip. I put the lens back in the glasses and tried to make the best of it, but after a couple of days I found out I could not keep using these glasses.
I went to the eye doctor to get my glasses replaced, while he was testing my eyes he noticed that I may had a blood flow problem to my optic nerve. I was asked to schedule an appointment at their main office. When I went to that appointment, just a few days later, it was confirmed the blood flow was being cut off to my optic nerve. The next test they did was to see how it was effecting my vision. To my despair they informed me that I needed to go to a local Neuro Optomologist. After going to his office my spirits only plummeted. He informed me that my optic nerve was a sand color and should be a salmon color, more tests were to follow.
After a CT Scan, more vision tests and dilations it was brought to my attention that I had atrophy of the optic nerve. It could be caused by a virus that could get better in a few months and to come back in a year. As that year went by and my eyesight got worse, I went back for the second time to the Neuro Optimologist. This time he told me that he did not know what was happening to my eye but it was spreading to my right eye. Then he said come back in a year, I was going blind and this man was just going to let it happen without a fight. In fact I felt like I was bugging him every time I called with a question. They had told me to watch for signs that it was getting worse, seeing different colors (one eye seeing something orange and the other eye seeing the same item as red), I contacted them, come back in a year. I came to the realization that I was going blind slowly.
I am a sales person for a hotel and while out on a sales blitz I came upon Fountain of Life Chiropractic office. I talked to the receptionist about my back pain, come to find out she was the doctors wife, she offered me a free physical examination. Well I went for it. I did not tell the doctor of my eye problems because I had come to the decision that if I went blind I was going to enjoy my eyesight while I had it. He was a chiropractor not an eye doctor, was I ever wrong. I went to Dr. Blumhardt for quite awhile before I told them my story, it may have been my second progress examine. This was months into my back adjustments.
I was in my kitchen one day and saw my cat run past my left leg while looking forward, my peripheral vision was returning. It was time for my next progress examination, when I filled out the questionnaire I let the cat out of the bag. I told Dr. B and Holly my story, at first I do not know what they thought except sorrow for what I had been going through for years. Dr. B was able to set up an appointment for me at another optomologist close to his office. Dr. Jeff Laferla got my records from my original exam at the first eye doctor that discovered my problem. We copied the test exactly as it had been done before. To all our surprise the test came out that my eyesight had come back in my left eye. I feel that if it had not been for the chance meeting of Holly at Fountain Of Life my eyesight would have been gone. I am a true believer in what the powers of what chiropractic can do. It all was FATE!!!
